Foreign institutes are becoming increasingly popular because of the wide spectrum of courses they offer, as there is a growing demand for those skill sets.

Q. Where do Indian universities stand in terms of academia and curriculum compared with European and American universities?
A. The education provided in India is comparable to some of the best in the world. However, unlike in India, the curriculum development of universities abroad is in sync with the industry needs and global development. At Leeds Metropolitan University, there is a strong emphasis on internationalisation of the curriculum so that the learning of students can be easily transferred across borders. For this we also provide them opportunities outside the classroom, such as volunteering across the world.

Q. How important are infrastructure and teaching tools for training and learning?
A. In my experience, they are one of the most important parameters for the success of a student. In the United Kingdom, we are constantly assessed for the quality of our infrastructure, and have taken great care for the same.

For example, our libraries are open 24x7 and we get 1.5 million visits per year to our libraries. Almost 99 per cent of the material available in the library is also available electronically. Our library has held the government’s Customer Service Excellence standard for over 10 years (awarded in 2001).

Our sports facilities are amongst the best in the United Kingdom, and the Chinese Olympic Committee used Leeds as their first-ever European training base. This has given students great learning opportunities. This is how great facilities can be linked with a great learning experience. Click here to read full interview..

HR FACTORED ED COHEN

Global Talent Leader Ed Cohen tells Jisla Xavier the need for corporate and academic worlds in India to have a greater connect with each other Issue Date - 01/07/2011

Mr. Ed Cohen has over 30 years experience in strategic leadership, influencing change and culture, and talent development. He is a leading business coach and has authored a best-seller titled ‘Leadership Without Borders’. Mr. Cohen has also helped two companies attain the number one ranking in the American Society of Training and Development BEST Awards. In an exclusive interview with The Human Factor, he talks about career, the lessons learnt and much more.

Q. You have played different roles in diverse businesses. Did you always know that this is what you wanted to do in life?

A. I did. I always knew that I want ed to do something in education and learning. Growing up, I wanted to be a doctor but when I got to college I did not want that, so I got into the business line. I did accounting for a couple of years and found out that the thing that I really loved was working with people. So, I left accounting and joined the education and learning world in 1982.

Q. What attracted you towards HR?

A. What initially attracted me is not the thing that actually kept me going throughout my career. When I was six, I was injured in a fire and had to spend six months in a hospital. My first grade teacher would come to the hospital every day after school and tutor me. She did it without any extra pay. This drew me towards teaching. When I went into learning, I discovered that I was able to articulate and communicate in a way that people could learn effectively, and it excited me.

The Dark Knight!

Of all the July 4ths that Bennett hates, he’ll hate July 4, 2008, the most. While the nation rejoiced on this day, he had already been sentenced to 16 years in Federal prison the day before... all thanks to his Dark Knight acts at Refco

“I knew failing to disclose these filings was wrong. I know I was wrong. I deeply regret it,” is how Phillip R. Bennett pleaded guilty, with eyes full of tears, before the US District Judge Naomi The Dark Knight!Reice Buchwald, on February 15, 2008. And what was his crime? Well he literally killed a company!!! Bennett, the former CEO of Refco Inc., a New York-based leading financial services company, earned fame having made millions for thousands of his clients (even US Senator Hillary Clinton was one!). But there was the dark side to this knight... he mismanaged Refco’s clients’ equity and disguised $430 million of bad debts. During its heydays, Refco was known as the largest non-bank US futures commission merchant of commodities and futures. The company was founded in 1969 by Lt. Thomas Dittmer and his stepfather Ray Freidman (who also had a criminal record!) as ‘Ray Freidman & Co.’ in Chicago. It was eventually relocated to New York. Its base had swelled to 200,000 customers and $4 billion in assets by October 2005. Then doomsday occurred. Many experts claim that Refco’s flameout was one of the most spectacular financial failures in US history amid civil and criminal investigations. Between its IPO in August 2005 and its October 18, 2005 bankruptcy filing, more than $1 billion in investor capital evaporated from Refco’s coffers. Beat this, it took just four days for Refco to transform from being the world’s largest commodities and futures brokerage to a company worth nothing, making it the fastest crash of a publicly listed company ever!...Continue

Heritage entry fee hike in rupee

Tour operators are opposing the government's decision

India’s top tour operators feel put down by the government's move to make foreign tourists pay in Indian currency. According to the decision foreign tourists visiting monuments protected by the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) will now pay the entry fee in rupee. Says an outraged Subhash Goyal, Chairman, Indian Association of Tour Operators (IATO): “Tour operators finalise their clients’ itineraries well in advance. Far from helping us, a fee hike would only create problems.”

From now onwards, each visitor will be charged Rs.250 or about $6 for giving a visit to a World Heritage Site such as the Qutab Minar, the Taj Mahal or the Ajanta and Ellora Caves, and Rs.100 for other monuments. This is a change from the previous dual tariff system under which the fee was $5 for World Heritage Sites and $2 for protected monuments such as the Red Fort & Purana Quila....Continue

A visionary optimist & a shrewd general, who’s witnessed the worst and prepares for the best!

Born on February 19, 1956 in Cicinnati, Ohio, the six-foot-four-inch Jeff had in some way been seasoned with GE’s value right since his childhood days as his father was an aircraft engines manager at GE’s Aviation unit. He met his wife Anrea at GE Plastics & has a daughter named Sarah. He holds Bachelor of Science degrees in Economics & Mathematics from Dartmouth College & topped it all up with an MBA degree from Harvard.

Th e highlight of his tenure at GE has remained the revival of the stagnant medical-products unit, transforming the company into being more consumer-oriented & his effective handling of the ‘environmental’ approach of GE called ‘Ecomagination’. However, challenges remain & the primary one being giving smiles to GE shareholders around the globe, amongst whom Jeff unlike many legendary CEOs, is not quite a hero.
